Behind the Veil and of The Senses: Works By Chayel Moses
ARTIST STATEMENT
Often bridging abstraction and identity, my practice is centered in visiting worlds of play, emotion, curiosity, and quiet revelations. I use a plethora of colors and forms to shape imagined realms that explore consciousness and the human experience. I am driven by a desire to understand the complexity of self. Within these explorations, I also consider social resistance and what defines my Blackness. In examining media representation for Black individuals, it is too often that we are portrayed with narratives of disruption, ignorance, and struggle. To counter these portrayals, both my paintings and sound work exist to emphasize the softness that is within Blackness. To create a space where we are dreamers; where imagination and magic opens pathways towards a gentle expansion of freedom. My resistance lives in establishing a more complete perception of Blackness. One that honors its fullness, imagination, and humanity.
ARTIST BIO
Chayel Moses is an interdisciplinary artist based in Albany, New York. Her work investigates the intersections between color, form, and perception, translating complex experiences into vibrant, layered moments across canvas, film, and sound. Moses earned a B.A. (2022) and M.F.A. (2024) in Fine Arts, with a concentration in painting, from the State University of New York at Albany. She has exhibited in a number of group shows, including Meatsuits at Blue Cones Studio (2026), Dreamscapes at Tubac Center for the Arts (2025), and the Explorations of Color at Site:Brooklyn Gallery (2025). She has received the University at Albany Studio Art Departmental Award (2022). Through her practice, Moses combines formal experimentation with a nuanced exploration of human experience, producing work that is both visually striking and conceptually rich.
